WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA?
Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.
Fibromyalgia Syndrome is NOT just one condition; it's a complex syndrome involving many different factors that can severely impact and disrupt a person’s daily life.
Symptoms sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no single triggering event.
Fibromyalgia often coexists with other painful conditions, such as:
Irritable bowel syndrome
Migraine and other types of headaches
Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome
Temporomandibular joint disorders
The most common treatment is a combination of education, stress reduction, exercise, and medication. There has been more research over the last few years regarding the Vagus nerve and its relationship to Fibromyalgia, and studies show that by stimulating the Vagus nerve, the pain associated with FMS can be reduced.
Here is where GYROTONIC® exercise enters the conversation.
The Gyrotonic Method includes gentle yet inherently powerful movements along with corresponding breathing patterns that nurture the nervous system. This combination stimulates the Vagus Nerve.
Gyrotonic allows us to deeply strengthen, elongate through chronic tension, and move fluidly through space while not tiring out or overloading the body’s response. The result is a more calm and open body, with less pain and an overall sense of wellbeing. The intention of the exercises is not to break the body down but to build it up, not to deplete the body but to bolster it, while we drop into the autonomic nervous system where healing takes place. When a session is complete you feel like you have opened your body up, all pathways are clear, you can feel the power from the inside out, but most of all you feel a wonderful sense of calm.
